We tackle these two critical justice issues through local service projects, urban plunges, winter and spring immersion trips and DeCal classes.
Why?
Homelessness When you live in Berkeley, you will encounter homeless men, women, youth and children on a regular basis. Do you give change to a panhandler, offer shelter for a night or walk on the other side of the street? Something in the system is broken—will you sneak by or address this one head on?
Immigration When you live in California you must learn about immigration issues. The service industry of this state is largely propelled by first generation immigrants, some legal, others not. Day laborers crowd corners in Berkeley, clamoring for work. Back breaking farm labor brings us the freshest and best produce, but at what cost? Conflict regularly arises at our border with Mexico—do you know why?
Be involved in more than “feel good” service projects. With our service-learning approach, you not only help others in ways that are really needed but you also delve deeply into the issues by reading, reflecting and talking with others about the complicated systems that fuel these issues day after day after day. We all hope to be more empowered to make a real change for the better!
